Are you curious about research science? Interested in learning computer programming? Looking to develop and apply your coding skills? Check out the 2020 PINC Summer Program (PSP)!
In the PSP, PINC students will work in small teams to learn new coding skills, and then apply those skills to a small collaborative research project in biology or chemistry. Along the way, students will be supported to practice reading the scientific literature, and science communication. The PSP will culminate in a presentation of research results at the Summer Research Symposium. Our goal is for all interested PSP participants to join a research lab the following academic year. The PSP grows out from the Summer Programs offered in years past.

FAQ
Who is eligible for the PSP?
Future, current, and former PINC students majoring in biology or chemistry are eligible for the PSP. Future PINC students are those who are enrolled or plan to enroll in CSC 306 in Summer 2020 or Fall 2020. Current PINC students have taken some, but not all PINC classes (CSC 306, CSC 220, CSC 307, CSC 690). Former PINC students have completed all of the PINC courses.
The PSP is designed for students who have not previously had research opportunities. Students who are currently supported by a research fellowship (ex: RISE, MARC, BUILD, Genentech) are not eligible as participants. Although those students who have taken some PINC classes are encouraged to apply to be PSP mentors (see below).
Do I need programming and/or research experience to join the PSP?
No! While some slots are reserved for current or former PINC students with programming experience, other slots are especially for students with no prior programming experience. Priority for those slots will be given to students who have taken PINC classes, or are enrolled in the first PINC class (CSC 306) over the summer.
What happens once the PSP is over?
After the end of the program, we will hold an event to connect interested students with labs that need quantitative/computationally skilled researchers.
What's the time commitment?
Participants will meet in their teams for 10 hours/week. A couple different options available for the specific schedules, but all sessions will be between 9am and 5pm Monday-Friday.
When will the program happen?
PSP is a nine week program, typically running from early June through early August. The program will culminate in a research presentation and celebration on the last Saturday (your friends, family, and supporters are invited to learn about your work!). You can still participate if you have some travel commitments in that time, just note that on your application.
How much does the PSP cost for participants?
The PSP is free!
Is there a stipend for participants?
Yes!!! For the first time in 2020 we are offering a $2,000 stipend to participants.
Is there a citizenship requirement?
The PSP can support students who are US citizens, permanent residents, or who have DACA or AB 540 status.
How do I apply?

Near-peer mentors
Are you are passionate about helping to spread data science skills to more SFSU students? Want to develop up your mentoring style with the guidance of a mentor advisor? Have some programming experience? Join the PSP as a near-peer mentor! PSP mentors spend 8 hours/week with their student teams, developing group cohesion and guiding participants to learn and apply technical data science skills.
Priority will be given to experienced PINC undergraduate students. Mentors will be paid $3,000 through the summer with a time commitment of about 15 hour/week for the duration of the PSP, plus a prior professional development for mentoring.
