PINC SUMMER PROGRAM - 2021 COHORT

We had so much fun at the 2021 PINC Summer Program!  It was our second year running the program virtually online.  Once again, 30 participants learned how to program in R or python and used their skill to do a research project working closely with a faculty member.  We really enjoyed all of the research presentations at the Summer Research Symposium!

  • "Automated analysis of residue conservation across prokaryotic homologs" with faculty advisors Drs Nicole Adelstein and Misty Kuhn
  • “The Great Sunflower Project: Effects of Drought on Pollinator Service” with faculty advisor Dr Gretchen LeBuhn
  • “The Effect That Climate has on Bird Migration and its Connection to Bird Body Mass Recovery Time” with faculty advisor Dr Derrick Groom
  • “The Impact of IDH Genotype to DNA Methylation Profiling in Gliomas” with grad student advisor Jessica Weng
  • "A hummingbird’s journey: migratory patterns and external factors" with faculty advisor Dr Jaime Chaves
  • “Genetic Inheritance’s Reliability in Criminal Investigations” with faculty advisor Dr Rori Rohlfs

Thanks to participants, near-peer mentors, faculty advisors, and the organizational team for a great PSP 2021!

Testimonials from PSP 2021 Students

“PSP led me through my first research project and allowed me to present on the summer project. PSP has given me confidence in my ability to do scientific research and analyze the results of the research. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to improve my public speaking through our research symposium at the end of the program.”

“Relentlessly positive, but slightly chaotic”

“PSP has really showed me how fun research and science can be if you’re in a group with people you get along with.”

“I think it was helpful because we were a small group with our mentor and advisor which made it more “relaxing”. We could easily ask questions, and reach to each other. It was a nice dynamic overall.”
